The Bull City Cosmic Hoedown is a radio program broadcast on WXDU Durham, 88.7fm, on Tuesday evenings 6pm-8pm. For 18 years, The Cosmic Hoedown has presented traditional roots music from all corners of the US, often featuring local and visiting musicians on-air for live performances and interviews. Piedmont Blues, honky-tonk, old-time string band music, bluegrass, folk, sacred steel, New Orleans R&B, delta blues, african, cajun, zydeco, western swing, jump blues and gospel music are all routinely featured on-air.

From 1999-2002, The Cosmic Hoedown presented a series of House Concerts in Durham featuring such artists as Ray Wylie Hubbard, Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard, Michael Hurley, Stacey Earle, Phil Lee, Jerry and Tammy Sullivan, Jim Watson & Mike Craver, Bill & Libby Hicks, Chuck Brodsky, Hooverville, Danny Flowers, among many others. The series was well received and was widely enjoyed by music fans, critics and the performers themselves.

Beginning in 2008, the Cosmic Hoedown is kicking off its brand new Bull City Roots Music Series. This series hopes to feature a variety of traditional and roots music artists and bands from all over the country, as well as some from our own backyard. Shows will take place in the lovely St. Joseph’s Performance Hall (the Sanctuary of the former St. Joseph’s AME church, which holds about 300 people) at the Hayti Heritage Center at 804 Old Fayetteville Street, Durham – just a minute away from the American Tobacco Historic District and the new Bull Durham Athletic Park.

Buying Advance Tickets

You may purchase your tickets online in advance of the show (and save a buck or two) by clicking the button shown below. We use PayPal's credit card processing services to allow you to purchase your tickets online and process your payment securely and safely. If you purchase your tickets in this manner, your name will be on a list at the will-call table the night of the concert. You will not need to print out anything, nor will you receive any physical tickets via the US Mail. Your name and the number of tickets you purchased will be on hand the night of the show. That makes things easier for everyone.

Note that there is a $1 handling/transaction fee for this service. Thus if you bought three tickets, you will be asked to charge $31 (3 x $10 per ticket + the $1 handling charge) to your credit card. This is necessary to offset the credit card fees that PayPal charges us.

Advance tickets will be available until 1pm Thurs Jan 31. After that time, you can just purchase your ticket at the door the night of the show. Doors open at 7:00. Show starts at 7:30.
